Macron Says Continued Fighting in Gaza Cannot Be Justified
French President Emmanuel Macron has renewed his call for an end to the fighting in Gaza, arguing that the ongoing conflict has created a humanitarian situation that requires urgent international attention.
In remarks at the United Nations, Macron said that “nothing” justifies the continued war in Gaza, while calling for an end to the violence and renewed efforts toward a political settlement. His comments came as France continued to advocate for a two-state solution and greater international involvement in addressing the conflict.
Macron has consistently argued that the security of Israel and the rights and safety of Palestinians must both be addressed. In his September 2025 UN speech, he condemned the October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas and called for the release of Israeli hostages, while also emphasizing the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
The French president's position has placed Paris among governments calling for an end to the fighting and a renewed diplomatic process. France has also formally recognized the State of Palestine, describing the move as part of a broader effort to advance a two-state solution.
In his latest UN address in September 2026, Macron again criticized the humanitarian situation in Gaza and called for international law and multilateral diplomacy to play a central role in resolving the conflict.
The statements have also generated political disagreement. Reporting by Reuters noted that Macron criticized President Donald Trump's Gaza initiative, while the White House defended Trump's approach and pointed to its stated achievements, including the return of hostages and a proposed peace framework.
The contrasting positions demonstrate the continuing international debate over how the Gaza conflict should end and what political arrangement should follow. Macron has emphasized diplomacy, humanitarian protections and a two-state framework, while other governments have focused more heavily on security arrangements and negotiations involving Israel and Hamas.
For civilians in Gaza and the region, the central issue remains whether diplomatic efforts can produce a durable cessation of hostilities and create conditions for humanitarian assistance and reconstruction.
Macron's latest remarks therefore add to an ongoing international debate over the future of Gaza, the security of Israel, Palestinian statehood and the role of major powers in pursuing a long-term political settlement.
